Introduction

Musical performances1 on night-time television programs have been a part of American culture since the debut of The Ed Sullivan Show in
1948, continuing through the 1960s with The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and progressing to the robust lineup of today’s current late night television hosts. Such performances have transformed our perception of artists, assisting them to build national awareness and to enhance their position in the marketplace.
