Introducing Global Musical Awareness Into the Undergraduate Music Industry Degree

Bruce Ronkin

Northeastern University

Abstract

Music industry educators have long recognized the global characteristics of the music industry. Music business courses in the music industry curriculum generally reflect this; however music history courses in music industry curricula generally do not provide students with a similar global perspective. The focus is primarily on Western classical music with little attention paid to world music, popular music, jazz, etc. The author investigates the case for encouraging music industry students to acquire a more diverse and global perspective on music. The paper attempts to define global musical literacy as it relates to music industry studies and it discusses the curricular, accreditation, and pedagogical implications of introducing global musical awareness into a music industry degree program.

Keywords: music industry curriculum, music business, music history, world music
